The BMW i Hydrogen NEXT includes an electric drive unit eDrive of the fifth generation with a buffer battery, a fuel cell, and a voltage converter. Hydrogen is contained in two tanks under a pressure of 700 bar, where up to 6 kg of gas can be pumped. A full refill of the capacity takes from three to four minutes.

The peak power of the drive unit is 275 kW, which is equivalent to 374 horsepower. The electrochemical generator in the fuel cell uses a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen as fuel, and the only emission is water vapor.
In two years, BMW intends to release a pilot batch of hydrogen cars based on the X5 crossover. The production version of such a car will appear in the second half of this decade. Recall that in the next few years, the Bavarian brand plans to bring at least 25 electrified models to the market, half of which will have fully electric powertrains.
