The tests are taking place on the challenging Panlong mountain route, which has over 600 sharp turns and climbs to an altitude of more than 3,500 meters. The work of the engineering team, consisting of more than 20 specialists, is personally overseen by Lei Jun, the founder and CEO of Xiaomi.

According to spy shots, the Xiaomi YU9 is a D-class SUV with a length of over 5.2 meters and a height of approximately 1.8 meters. The car is expected to feature a hybrid powertrain with an 80 kWh battery, which will provide over 400 kilometers of range in electric mode.

Some prototypes also have a lidar and advanced driver assistance systems, indicating possible preparation for a high degree of autonomous driving. However, some test samples do not have a lidar — the manufacturer is likely testing different equipment options.
