Strictly speaking, it would have been more logical for the German crossover Volkswagen ID.4 to meet its direct class competitor in a comparative test — the compact SUV Tesla Model Y. But since this model is not yet available on the European market, the testers decided to take for the test the "three", built on the same platform and practically no different in terms of technical content. By the way, this sedan is currently considered the most sought-after electric car in the world.

Now about the figures shown by the runs. During the test by L'Automobile, the Volkswagen ID.4 1st covered 340 km on the motorway, while the Tesla Model 3 Long Range covered exactly 300 km, that is, the lag was 40 km. In the urban cycle, the situation repeated: the Volkswagen drove 464 km, while the Tesla drove 445 km. The only discipline where the "three" was ahead is driving on ordinary country highways: 393 km versus 388 km for the competitor.

Such results look unexpected, especially if we recall the range indicators declared by the manufacturers. For the Volkswagen ID.4 1st, according to the EPA cycle, it is 400 km, and for the Tesla Model 3 Long Range — as much as 568 km. At the same time, both cars are equipped with batteries of the same capacity — 82 kWh, and are in the same price segment: in Germany, they ask 48,691 euros for the ID.4, and 53,560 euros for the Model 3 in the corresponding trim levels.
