The Gran Coupe variant became the third representative of the 8-Series lineup — after the coupe and convertible. The car borrowed all the main design elements from the two-door versions of the "eight." However, compared to the standard coupe, the Gran Coupe's wheelbase has increased by 231 millimeters. At the same time, the car has grown in length to 5082 mm (+201 millimeters). The width of the four-door is 1932 mm (+30 mm), and the height is 1407 mm (+66 millimeters). The rear row of the new model can be folded in a 40:20:40 ratio. The trunk volume is 440 liters.

The base engine for the 8-Series Gran Coupe is a 3.0-liter diesel engine with 320 hp and 680 Nm of torque. Acceleration to 100 km/h with this engine takes 5.1 seconds for the Gran Coupe. The new model can also be purchased with a 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. The engine's power is 335 hp and 369 Nm of torque. In addition, customers will be offered a 4.4-liter gasoline engine. The engine's power is 530 hp and 750 Nm of torque. Acceleration to 100 km/h is 3.9 seconds.

The engines work in conjunction with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. The car is equipped with a rear differential lock and a new suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers. The car is available with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

Sales of the M version of the BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe will begin later. This version of the "four-door" will receive a 4.4-liter V8 engine with two turbochargers. In the standard M8 coupe, this engine produces 600 hp, and in the Competition variant, the output is increased to 625 horsepower.
Like the coupe, the new model can be ordered with the Carbon package: in this case, the roof and mirror caps of the car will be made of carbon. Traditionally for the BMW 8-Series, the Bavarians offer a huge number of assistance systems. The driver has access to adaptive cruise control with full stop function, lane change and lane keeping assistant, night vision system, and parking assistance function.
