The "seventh X" is based on the modular CLAR architecture used in the third and seventh series models, as well as in the new generation X3. The upcoming top-end BMW crossover will be quite large: its length will reach 5100 millimeters, width — 2020 millimeters, height — 1800 millimeters. In these parameters, the X7 surpasses the "X-five" by 178, 16, and 55 millimeters, respectively. The distance between the axles also differs: 3010 millimeters versus 2975.

Pilot assembly of the new BMW X7 at the plant in Spartanburg (USA) started at the end of last year. Other brand crossovers — X3, X4, X5, and X6 — are also assembled at this site.

At the start of sales, the X7 will be offered with inline six-cylinder engines of three liters, as well as with V8 engines of 4.4 liters — both gasoline and diesel. Subsequently, the lineup will be supplemented by a hybrid modification combining a two-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor.
