The Chinese premiere of the sedan is actually a restyled version of the second-generation Peugeot 408, which has been produced in China since 2014.
The second-generation Peugeot 408 is based on the modern EMP2 modular architecture, which is also used in the 308 hatchback. Unlike its sibling, the sedan features an increased wheelbase of 2730 millimeters and a more conventional interior design: Chinese buyers did not appreciate the non-standard dashboard with instruments placed on top, so it was decided to return to a classic layout.
The exterior of the updated Peugeot 408 is styled after the new 508 liftback: the lower air intake has become more angular and features decorative "fangs" on the sides, while the radiator grille has grown and now has three-dimensional cells instead of horizontal slats.
The front headlights have become slightly sharper, and the rear lights have gained a black backing with a depth effect — a similar solution is used on the Peugeot 508. Additionally, the exhaust pipe has acquired a twin decorative tip of larger diameter.
Inside, no changes have been made. The driver still has access to a multimedia system with a 9.7-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay support, and rear-view camera feed, as well as a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel.
The engine lineup for the sedan will remain the same: two turbocharged petrol units of 1.2 and 1.6 liters, producing 136 and 167 horsepower respectively. As for the naturally aspirated 1.8 engine, its future remains uncertain. Sales of the updated model are scheduled to start on August 29.
