Specialists from the analytical company IHS Markit have calculated that automakers will have to pay about 14 billion euros after the updated WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure) testing rules come into effect.
In 2021, the permissible threshold for harmful emissions will be set at 114.9 grams per kilometer. However, IHS Markit experts predict that leading automotive concerns will only manage to achieve a figure of 122.9 grams per kilometer by that time. Penalties for each sold vehicle that does not meet the established standards will average 624 euros in 2020 and 814 euros in 2021.
In the context of falling demand for diesel cars, manufacturers are advised to pay attention to alternative ways of reducing harmful emissions. These include the use of LED headlights, better thermal insulation, and the installation of generators with increased efficiency.
