The appearance of all-wheel drive transmission on compact cars will give the Volkswagen concern a chance to prepare the most powerful versions of the VW Polo hatchbacks (such a modification will get the R prefix in the name) and Audi A1 (in this case, the letter S will be added to the name), as well as a CrossPolo version, which will have all wheels driven.
It is worth recalling that the current most dynamic Audi A1 debuted at the Paris Motor Show. Under its hood is a 185-horsepower 1.4-liter unit with two turbochargers, which is also used on the "hot" VW Polo GTI, Seat Ibiza Cupra and Skoda Fabia RS. However, Audi decided not to give such a car the name S1, since the hatchback has drive only to the front axle, while all models with the letter S are traditionally equipped with all-wheel drive.
Earlier, there was information that VW plans for Polo R a new 1.6-liter turbo engine with direct fuel injection, producing about 210 horsepower. But later this information was refuted by the head of the technical department of the German brand, Ernst Linder, who said that Volkswagen had abandoned the idea of releasing the Polo R. This decision was made to avoid internal competition and protect the Audi S1. However, work on the R version is still ongoing.
Small hatchbacks of the VW concern will get all-wheel drive
Volkswagen Group plans to modernize the PQ25 platform, which is already used for the Skoda Fabia, as well as for the latest generation Volkswagen Polo and Seat Ibiza, to support an all-wheel drive system.
