The tests were conducted by the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Nine popular midsize SUVs participated in the tests (see table). The test method is a frontal impact with 25% overlap.

According to the test results, the safest, receiving the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, were the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. The Toyota Highlander came close to them and also received this award.

The Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, essentially twin brothers, earned top honors because by 2014 they had reinforced front pillars and a modernized front body structure.

The worst results were for the Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-9, and Honda Pilot. In the Honda Pilot, the parking brake moved 42 centimeters into the cabin, the steering column shifted 14 centimeters to the right, and the airbag protected only a small part of the dummy's head. The car body underwent severe deformation, and the installed sensors recorded possible injuries to the left knee, hip, and shins of both legs.
