Elon Musk explained this decision by saying that the cheaper Tesla Model S Plaid is almost as good. It is expected to go into production as early as June and be sold from $119,990.

Recall that the Tesla Model S Plaid is equipped with three electric motors with a total power of 1034 hp and can accelerate to 100 km/h in 2.1 seconds and reach 320 km/h. It can travel 628 km without recharging.

The Plaid+ announced slightly more power (1115 hp) and promised somewhat better dynamics, although exact acceleration figures were not reported. This version was supposed to be the most expensive Tesla - $149,990.

The difference in cost compared to the regular Plaid is due to a much larger range of more than 840 km – this was achieved through new 4680 format batteries. No Tesla is capable of that, and it would have been a record among production electric cars.

However, Elon Musk unexpectedly stated that such "long-range" capability is not needed. Like, no one travels such long distances without breaks for coffee, a snack, or the restroom, so you can recharge along the way.

It is not yet clear what will be done with those who did decide to buy the Tesla Model S Plaid+ and made a payment. It is quite possible that they will get their money back or be offered the Plaid version instead.
