At the Beijing Auto Show, Honda showcased its electric SUV e:concept. This is already the second electric car in the brand's model lineup.
Honda's first electric vehicle was the compact hatchback E, which debuted at the beginning of the year. However, this model is not sold in China.
Technical details about the powertrain of the e:concept SUV have not yet been disclosed, but it appears it will feature a single electric motor similar to the one in the E, with more than 151 hp.
It is also expected that the SUV will have a greater range than the E, which only offers 200 km. To compete with the currently popular Nissan Ariya, at least 350 km will be required.
So far, only one image of the concept has been published, and it bears little resemblance to the Honda E. This suggests that the Japanese manufacturer does not intend to stick to a "cute" design in its electric vehicles.
Honda has already confirmed that the production version will feature new safety systems and driving assistants, including all-round ADAS, as well as new connectivity features: an AI interface, smartphone integration, and wireless updates.
Exact production timelines have not yet been announced, but it is likely that the model will be unveiled next year, with production starting shortly after.
Although this SUV is aimed at the Chinese market, Honda plans to electrify all its major models and release six new SUVs by the end of 2022. The first will be the Honda E and Jazz e:HEV, followed by hybrid versions of the Civic and HR-V.
