Each wheel is equipped with a separate electric motor that can operate autonomously from the others. This allows the wheels on each axle to rotate in opposite directions, giving the large pickup truck impressive maneuverability both on the highway and off-road.
The Rivian brand attracted public attention in late 2018, when the American company presented its first project — the RT1 pickup truck. The model was equipped with an independent double-wishbone suspension at the front and a multi-link design at the rear, as well as pneumatic adaptive shock absorbers that allow adjusting ground clearance from 200 to 340 mm. In the top version with batteries of 180 kWh capacity, the combined power of the four motors reaches 765 hp, and torque — 1120 N·m.
Later, Rivian introduced another new product — a spacious seven-seat SUV, the RS1, equipped with powertrains with similar characteristics. Rivian electric pickup trucks and SUVs can recharge each other's batteries via a special cable.
In April 2019, it became clear that the Ford corporation would invest $500 million in Rivian. The agreement implies joint work on next-generation batteries and the production of "fundamentally new" electric vehicles, the details of which are still kept secret.
