The new model features the characteristic front-end design of the Bavarian brand's compact models, with a two-section radiator grille connected in the middle, narrowed LED headlights with integrated fog lights, and enlarged air intakes. In particular, similar solutions can be found on the X2 crossover, as well as on the recently presented third-generation 1-Series hatchback.

In standard trim, the BMW X1 is offered with a 6.5-inch multimedia display, but for versions with navigation, an 8.8-inch monitor is available, as well as a new 10.25-inch touchscreen. The multimedia system can also be controlled using the iDrive controller and voice commands.
As before, the updated BMW X1 is available with three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The base engine is a 1.6-liter diesel with 116 horsepower, paired with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The top version, the X1 xDrive25i, is equipped with a two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 231 horsepower. The engine works in conjunction with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. This crossover can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds.
In March 2020, the BMW X1 will get a hybrid version, the xDrive25e, with the ability to recharge the battery from a household power outlet. The two-liter petrol engine will work in tandem with an electric motor. The range on electric power alone will be 50 kilometers.
