In other words, the XC60, V90, S60 and other model names, which have become truly legendary over the decades, will become history. As Håkan Samuelsson stated in an interview with Autocar, the first model with a completely new name will be the successor to the flagship crossover XC90.
According to the brand's CEO, the innovation is related to the fact that Volvo is awaiting transformation into a manufacturer of exclusively electric cars. The goal is to make car names more emotional in contrast to the well-known combinations of letters and numbers.

Recall that earlier Volvo stated its intention to abandon the production of fuel-powered cars by 2030.

Obviously, Volvo has decided to follow the path of other oldest automakers that have set a course for the "electrification" of their model range and intend to abandon internal combustion engines altogether in the near future. For example, Volkswagen uses the ID brand for its electric vehicles (ID.3, ID.4, etc.), BMW uses iX (iX3, iX4, etc.), Mercedes-Benz uses EQ (EQC, EQA, EQS, etc.). Obviously, with such "rebranding" the brands intend to refresh their relevance and attract a larger customer audience, including a completely new one.
It should be noted that the current approach to forming Volvo model names works as follows: the XC index is used for SUVs, V for station wagons, C for coupes, and S for sedans. At the same time, a two-digit number indicates the class: 30, 40 – compact cars, 60 – mid-size, 90 – full-size, flagship models.
