The decision to move the electronic speed limit from 250 km/h to 180 km/h is dictated by the goals of the Volvo Vision 2020 program. This plan assumes that starting from 2020, no person inside a new Volvo car will face fatal outcomes or serious injuries as a result of a traffic accident.
The Swedish automaker relies on statistics from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which shows that speeding causes more than a quarter of all serious accidents.
In addition, Volvo is working on an intelligent feature that will limit speed using information about "geofences" — virtual areas highlighted on the map. Such a system, for example, will be able to automatically reduce the permissible speed threshold near schools, hospitals, and other social infrastructure facilities.
Additionally, new technologies are being developed that can monitor the driver's concentration and fatigue level, as well as detect signs of alcohol or drug influence.
