Despite constant discussions about rising electricity prices and instability in the fuel market, electric cars still remain one of the most cost-effective options for daily trips.
The number of electric cars is increasing, and with it the requirements
Already in May, Ukraine had over 150 thousand electric vehicles. Moreover, almost 40% of them are cars with batteries of 50 kWh or more. These are no longer compact city cars, but real "long-haulers" capable of covering long distances between cities without the need for frequent recharging.
The spread of fast charging station networks also allows not relying on a home outlet — previously this was one of the main barriers for potential buyers.
Is it still worth choosing electric?
Yes. Even if you charge an electric car only at public charging stations, it will still be cheaper than buying traditional fuel. Here are the specific numbers:
If the car consumes on average 20 kWh per 100 km — such a trip will cost about 370 UAH, which is 10 UAH more compared to April.
For comparison:
A car on gas will spend approximately 430 UAH for the same distance.
Petrol engine — at least 550 UAH.

Charging prices: May 2025
Experts from the Institute of Car Market Research analyzed tariffs in the apps of leading Ukrainian charging network operators. The average price depends on the connector type:
AC (standard charging) — 15.15 UAH/kWh (+0.26 UAH).
DC (fast charging) — 17.82 UAH/kWh (+0.42 UAH).

However, there are also disadvantages — in particular, the significant depreciation of electric vehicles on the secondary market. A few years ago, many Ukrainians paid from 60 to 100 thousand dollars or more for new Teslas. Now, these same cars are hard to sell even for a third of their original cost. This is worth remembering for everyone considering buying an electric car — especially a new one.
