Since August 25, residents and guests of Singapore have the opportunity to use the services of six driverless cars. This high-tech fleet includes electric models Renault Zoe and Mitsubishi i-MiEV.
Each of the cars is equipped with six sets of lidar systems, which use a laser to help the car navigate in space. In addition, the vehicles have two cameras on the dashboard, which are responsible for scanning obstacles and tracking changes in traffic light signals.
The carrier has promised that by the end of this year the number of autonomous cars will increase to 12, and by 2018 it is planned to fully switch the entire fleet to such cars. According to Doug Parke, the chief operating officer of the Singaporean company, launching the nuTonomy self-driving taxi in urban traffic will reduce the number of cars in the city threefold, from 900,000 to 300,000.
For now, the operation of the self-driving taxi is limited to the business district of Singapore: the service operates within 6.5 square kilometers of the city-state's area.
