The new product was named Highway Teammate — it allows the car to move on highways without driver involvement. For testing, engineers took a modified Lexus GS.

Toyota demonstrated the capabilities of the "autopilot" in Tokyo: the video shows the car independently entering and exiting the highway, performing maneuvers and changing lanes. In autonomous mode, the electronics take over control of the accelerator pedal, brakes, and steering wheel.

Toyota plans to start installing the autonomous control system on production cars starting in 2020. It is worth noting that similar developments are underway at other manufacturers. For example, Audi is preparing a similar technology for the new generation of its flagship sedan A8.
