The Bavarians have prepared a safety car based on the standard M4 version, equipped with a three-liter twin-turbo inline-six with a water injection system. No, of course, water does not replace fuel; it has a different function – cooling the fuel-air mixture passing through the intake manifold.

The computer monitors the amount of water injected by the injector, and it performs calculations based on data on crankshaft speed and engine temperature. This technology allows extending the engine's service life and provides the opportunity to further increase power and stability of its operation.

In sport mode, the 5-liter water tank is enough for one session. During calm everyday driving in urban conditions, it will need to be refilled approximately once every five fuel refills. This technology is likely to appear on regular production cars of the brand. But when this might happen is still unknown.
You can watch a video on how the liquid injection system into the intake manifold works.
