This decline is particularly noticeable given that the battery electric vehicle (BEV) market overall grew by 27.8%. If we take into account all electrified models — from pure electric cars to hybrids and plug-in hybrids — their share in the structure of new EU registrations reached 59%, compared to 47.7% a year earlier.
Why did this happen?
– The presentation of the updated Model Y did not live up to expectations and failed to boost buyer interest.
– Chinese manufacturers, particularly SAIC, are actively winning back positions: their figures grew by 24.5%.
– Reputational risks associated with the figure of Elon Musk also influence consumer choice — some Europeans deliberately avoid Tesla.
At the same time, Tesla's market share is rapidly shrinking: in April it was only 0.7%, compared to 1.3% a year earlier. This is already the fourth consecutive month of decline for the company.
Despite turbulence and political pressure, total sales in the EU, UK, and EFTA countries remained almost unchanged — 1.07 million cars, just 0.3% less than last year. However, the EU market itself has been declining for the fourth consecutive month — down 1.2%.
Among markets with positive dynamics:
– Spain: +7.1%
– Italy: +2.7%
France (–5.6%), Germany (–0.2%), and the UK (–10.4%), on the other hand, show a decline.
