This decision became another stage in the trade confrontation between the two states. Back on April 2, 2025, American leader Donald Trump announced the introduction of an additional duty of 34% on Chinese goods, and Beijing did not leave this unanswered, introducing its own restrictions.

After that, Trump threatened to increase the tariff by another 50%, which would ultimately amount to 104% if China did not abandon its countermeasures.

The new duties create significant difficulties for Chinese car brands targeting the US market. In particular, Polestar and Lotus, which intended to present their cars to American buyers, are now forced to overcome significant financial barriers caused by high rates.

The Chinese side, in response, characterized Washington's actions as "blackmail" and declared its readiness to "stand to the end."
