About 100 specialists in mobile architecture modeling from more than 20 countries worked on the creation of the new BMA modular platform for four years. This development became the second after the CMA platform, created jointly with Volvo.
The BMA architecture is highly flexible and scalable. It can be used to create cars with a wide variety of powertrains, including electric ones, as well as various chassis and body module options. These modules are assembled like a construction set, allowing for many vehicle modifications. All components have standardized connection interfaces, allowing engineers to give the car any shape — from sedans and crossovers to minivans. The time to develop a new model is reduced from 36 to 18–24 months.
Key features of the BMA architecture:
- Versatility and scalability flexibility. The platform allows creating cars with different body types — from crossovers and sedans to station wagons and minivans. The wheelbase can range from 2550 to 2700 mm, and the track width from 1500 to 1600 mm. Engineers can choose the vehicle dimensions at their discretion. The modular structure ensures scalability and speeds up the production process.
- Many options for powertrain and transmission layouts. The BMA architecture is initially designed for further electrification of the model range. It can accommodate Geely gasoline engines with volumes of 1.0TD, 1.4T, and 1.5TD, as well as hybrid systems: plug-in (PHEV), mild (MHEV), and classic (HEV).
- Enhanced level of active and passive safety. When creating BMA, the main priority was the protection of passengers and pedestrians. The structure consists of 70% high-strength steel, and 20% of parts are made by hot stamping. The developers aimed to surpass five-star European safety standards, especially in terms of active systems, including autonomous driving of level L2 and promising level L3.
- More space in the cabin and an increased trunk. Thanks to the optimization of the layout of the powertrain, transmission, suspension, seats, and body elements, engineers managed to achieve maximum internal volume.
The use of the BMA modular platform will allow Geely to significantly reduce production scaling costs, as all cars on this architecture will have a high degree of unification. It is planned that 70% of all components will be common for models built on the same platform. This will reduce testing and production costs. In addition, the growth in procurement volumes of identical parts will be an incentive for suppliers to improve the quality of their products.
It is worth recalling that in 2018, Geely Auto entered the era of new energy and presented its diversification strategy, which covers four technological directions: hybrid installations, alternative fuels, hydrogen fuel cells, and pure electric technologies. At the same time, the company announced the launch of production of the flagship smart hybrid Bo Rui GE (Geely Atlas).
