The estate borrowed its engine lineup from the sedan of the same name. It includes new four-cylinder two-liter turbocharged units developing 184 hp (320i version) and 258 hp (330i version). The diesel range is represented by two-liter engines with 150 hp (318d) and 190 hp (320d), as well as a 265-horsepower three-liter six-cylinder unit (330d). In addition, the new model received an M340i version with a 3.0-liter gasoline engine. The unit's power is 375 horsepower. Next year, the estate will also get a hybrid modification.

The new model is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. For the initial diesel units, a six-speed manual transmission is offered. The driver has access to dynamic cruise control, Start/Stop function, driving mode switch, and parking proximity warning. Base versions of the car will go on sale with front-wheel drive. The XDrive all-wheel drive system is available as an option.

The car has grown in overall dimensions compared to the sedan of the same name. The rear row can be folded in a 40:20:40 ratio. In this case, the trunk size will be 1510 liters. The estate, like the sedan, differs from its predecessor with a more sporty appearance, as well as the absence of the signature "Hofmeister kink," which the designers decided to abandon.
