The car's premiere will take place at the Detroit auto show in early 2017. Previously, it was planned that the car would debut at the Paris Motor Show in the fall of this year. However, in the French capital, instead of the new BMW 5-Series sedan, the German brand will show the new X2 crossover.
The images show a prototype of the production version of the model. The photographs demonstrate the process of generating a 3D image of the car using special manipulators. The device collects ultra-precise data that helps detect flaws already at the initial stage of production.

The new BMW 5-Series will be built on the modular 35up platform – the same one that underpins the BMW 7-Series. When developing the body of the "five", experience with lightweight materials gained during the creation of the i3 and i8 models was used. According to preliminary information, the model will be about 100 kg lighter than its predecessor. The car's weight will be about 1500 kilograms. The dimensions of the car will remain the same as before.

There is no exact information about the engine lineup yet, but most likely it will include four-, six-, and eight-cylinder turbocharged units. A hybrid version is also planned. Many modern systems for the 5-Series will be borrowed from the current-generation "seven".

A little later, a 5-Series GT variant will also appear. It is already being tested in Munich. Sales of the car should start at the end of 2017. The model will get a sloping roof, narrow headlights, an unusual radiator grille, and a new exhaust system with two pipes. The car will become noticeably lighter than its predecessor.
