According to local media, the incident occurred just moments after the owner of the electric Volkswagen unplugged the charging cable. As soon as the woman noticed smoke coming from the car, she took her child out of the cabin, moved to a safe distance, and called the fire department.

Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene, but they could not save the ID.3 – the hatchback burned out completely. In addition, a Nissan Leaf parked behind the Volkswagen was also damaged by the fire.

Fires in electric vehicles are far from rare in recent years. Take, for example, the recent case of a Tesla Model S in the USA, which not only destroyed itself but also the garage it was in, along with another Tesla. However, this is the first time something like this has happened with the Volkswagen ID.3. What is surprising is that the ID.3 belongs to the new generation of electric cars (produced since 2020), it has well-thought-out protection for the battery and wiring (against short circuits, overheating) and, in theory, it should have been protected from such troubles. Even considering that the car was connected to a problematic charger.
At the moment, Volkswagen is investigating the causes of the incident, and following the investigation, the company will inform the public of the results.
