The winner was chosen by a jury consisting of 60 press representatives from 23 countries. The electric Jaguar I-Pace and the French coupe Alpine A110 scored the same number of points — 250 each. To determine the leader, an additional count was conducted, taking into account how many judges placed a particular model in first place. As a result, the British car received 18 first places, while the French one — 16.
Among the other contenders, the Kia Ceed hatchback took third place with 247 points, and the Ford Focus came fourth with 235 points. Next were representatives from France: the Citroen C5 Aircross and Peugeot 508 earned 210 and 192 points respectively. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class closed the top seven with a result of 116 points.
A year earlier, the title of Car of the Year in Europe was won by the Volvo XC40 crossover, which significantly outpaced the Seat Ibiza hatchback and the BMW 5-Series sedan.
