While driving through the streets of Tempe, Arizona, a self-driving crossover could not avoid a collision with 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg, who suddenly rode out directly in front of the car. The woman died in the hospital from her injuries.

At the time of the accident, there was a driver behind the wheel of the Volvo, who had virtually no chance to take control in time.

Local police noted that the self-driving vehicle was moving in autonomous mode at a speed of 61 km/h and had no technical ability to brake in time before the woman who suddenly darted out on a bicycle.

Despite the apparent lack of fault on Uber's part in the tragic incident, the company decided to temporarily suspend testing of self-driving taxis on city streets.
