According to statistics, in 2022, 10.4 thousand stolen cars were recorded in Ukraine. This figure turned out to be only 3.8 thousand less than the total data for the previous three years — from 2019 to 2021.
Statistical reports do not specify particular cities with the highest theft rates, but among regions, the occupied territories held the lead.
In 2023, the indicators gradually began to improve. One of the reasons for stabilization was the introduction of modern anti-theft solutions, in particular products from Benish GPS. There is no official ranking of cities by the level of car crime. It is only known that during 2021–2023, 1019 cars were stolen in the capital.
In addition, at certain periods, Odesa, Kharkiv, and Dnipro were among the most problematic cities in this regard. If we assess the overall picture of auto crime in large cities, it can be assumed that the leaders are the temporarily occupied Donetsk and Luhansk.
Comparison of theft statistics in the regions of Ukraine
The war on the territory of Ukraine, of course, has affected the criminogenic situation. Data published by Opendatabot experts indicate that the most thefts were recorded in the eastern part of the country — exactly where active hostilities took place and temporarily occupied territories are located.
- In Donetsk region, 2663 cars were stolen in 2021–2023.
- Luhansk region ranks second with 1906 stolen cars over the same period.
- Zaporizhzhia region closes the top three — 1454 thefts were recorded there.
Theft statistics in different regions in the west of the country look much more optimistic. The fewest cars are stolen in Ivano-Frankivsk, Zakarpattia, and Chernivtsi regions (33, 46, and 59 cases, respectively). The situation is quite calm in Volyn, Zhytomyr, and Khmelnytskyi regions (94, 99, and 99 stolen cars). But things look different in the neighbors of the leading regions. In Kharkiv region, the number of thefts was 1040, and in Dnipropetrovsk region — 955. Kyiv region did not make it to the leaders: criminals stole 797 cars there.
