Spy photographers captured a test prototype of the new generation VW Golf near the company's headquarters in Wolfsburg. Under the body of the current Golf hides a "mule" — the term used for technical samples on which the components of the future model are tested.
The seventh generation VW Golf will be built on a new modular platform with a transverse engine layout, known as MQB. This chassis will later form the basis for the next generations of Touran, Golf Plus, and Scirocco, as well as a number of Skoda, Audi, and Seat models. It was previously reported that this architecture will allow for the production of vehicles with different wheelbase lengths and in various body styles — from convertibles to SUVs and minivans.
The range of TSI petrol engines for the hatchback will be quite wide: the base will be an economical 1.2-liter engine with 65 horsepower, and the flagship will be a two-liter "four" with an output of 300 horsepower. The diesel lineup will be represented by units with a displacement of 1.6 and 2.0 liters. Depending on the version, engines can be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed DSG "robot" with dual clutches. All-wheel drive, as expected, will be available exclusively for the most powerful versions of the model.
In addition, the seventh Golf will feature a fully electric version e_Bluemotion and a hybrid modification. The latter, according to preliminary data, will receive a power plant combining a 122-horsepower two-liter turbodiesel, an electric motor with 82 horsepower, and a set of batteries. On pure electric power, such a hybrid will be able to cover up to 48 kilometers.
The model's equipment will also be updated. According to the photo published by Auto Express, it is clear that the car will receive a camera in the lower part of the front bumper, which will monitor road markings and signs, as well as an improved multimedia system with internet access.
The premiere of the new Golf is expected in March next year at the Geneva Motor Show, and sales in Europe are scheduled to start in October 2012.
