Historical background
The debut of the Skoda Octavia took place in the fall of 1996 at the Paris Motor Show, and serial production started the following year.
In 2000, the model underwent an update that affected the exterior and interior.
On February 17, 2004, the millionth copy was produced — a gray Octavia Tour with a 1.9-liter diesel engine producing 90 hp.
In August 2004, the plant in Mlada Boleslav stopped production of the first generation, switching to the second generation of the model.
In March 2005, in honor of the company's centenary, a limited series of Octavia Tour "Edition 100" was released.
Since November 2005, the Octavia Combi Tour station wagon was assembled at the Indian plant in Aurangabad. The model was also produced at Eurocar facilities in Ukraine until April 2010.
On October 1, 2010, production of the Octavia Tour ended — replaced by the updated Skoda Octavia II.
Body
The exterior of the Octavia Tour was developed by Czech designers, as the manufacturer itself states. For buyers, however, this is not the main thing. More important is that the body is fully galvanized, so corrosion is not a concern — even on the earliest examples. Skoda gives a ten-year warranty against through rust and three years on the paintwork. If rust is still found on the body, it is most likely the result of poor-quality repair after an accident.
Overall, the body turned out to be well-thought-out and balanced, without excesses in design. Dirk Van Braeckel, who previously created the Audi A3 and Audi 80 Avant, worked on the project. The only detail that can upset the owner is the large brand emblems at the front and rear, which often become prey for vandals. The front badge costs about 100 UAH, the rear one is slightly cheaper.

When inspecting a used car, it is worth checking the gas struts of the trunk lid — it is heavy, and over time the shock absorbers stop holding it. Also pay attention to the rear power windows: according to service statistics, they break quite often (a new part will cost about 600 UAH, plus about 100 UAH for labor). On uneven roads, the Octavia Tour may have squeaky door locks.
Interior
The interior of the Octavia Tour is made of quality materials focused on practicality and wear resistance. The design is modest, but the assembly is neat. Various "smart" little things and convenient accessories make the car a good choice for families with children.

The front seats cannot boast pronounced lateral support, but they hold quite firmly. A driver of almost any height can sit comfortably behind the wheel. The seat and steering column are adjustable in height. Ergonomics, however, cause mixed feelings: the switches and gear lever are convenient, but the steering wheel does not lie in the hands ideally. The accelerator pedal is located a bit low, so you will have to get used to the pedal assembly. In the back seat, three people will be cramped even with average passenger builds.

At the rear, there is a lack of legroom — especially if tall people sit in front. Part of the cabin volume was "given" to the trunk by engineers.
Forward visibility is good, but when reversing, the high rear forces reliance only on the side mirrors.
Comfort during trips is provided by air conditioning, which is present on most cars. In top trim levels, climate control was installed — most often on petrol turbocharged versions. There are practically no complaints about the operation of the air conditioner and climate in the Octavia Tour.

The main trump card of the Octavia Tour is the spacious trunk (528 and 548 l). If necessary, its volume can be increased by folding the rear seats — then both large purchases and everything needed for vacation will fit.

Engines
On the Ukrainian secondary market, Octavia Tour with petrol engines of 1.6–1.8 l are most often found. Diesel modifications are less common, and weak 1.4-liter versions were not officially supplied to our country.
The pump on Octavia engines is driven by the timing belt, so with each belt replacement (interval — 60,000 km), the condition of the water pump must be checked. If antifreeze leaks or the shaft has play, the pump should be replaced immediately, otherwise valve-piston contact is inevitable.
The most popular version here is with a 1.6-liter petrol engine. However, such cars sometimes have air flow meter failures. The reason is the unsuccessful design of the air intake pipe with a filter mesh at the inlet, which over time becomes clogged and overloads the flow meter potentiometer, leading to its breakdown.

Two-liter engines are characterized by increased oil consumption. For 1.8 Turbo engines, the weak point is the turbocharger, whose resource is approximately 150–200 thousand km. To extend its life, you need to operate the car correctly: do not start moving on an unheated engine (a couple of minutes of idling is enough to warm up the oil) and after long trips, let the engine run at idle for 2–3 minutes to avoid turbo coking — for this, you can install a turbo timer.

Skoda engines are unpretentious: the 1.6 engine calmly digests 92-octane petrol, although the manufacturer recommends AI-95. Many owners service the car themselves. But there is a nuance here: when unscrewing the drain plug, it is easy to strip the thread, and then you will have to replace the oil pan — this is about 1500 UAH including labor.
Diesel versions are very economical — about 5 l per 100 km in the combined cycle. However, due to the poor quality of local fuel, diesel is difficult to recommend unequivocally, especially modifications with unit injectors (1.9 TDI 100/130 hp).

Poor-quality diesel fuel disables fuel pumps, the restoration of which will cost 8000 UAH.
Transmission
Most Octavia Tour on our roads are equipped with a manual gearbox. The "automatic" is a rarity, and it is not known for reliability: the differential satellite axles can shift and pierce the housing. The remaining units cause no complaints.
The manual has a typical ailment — poor engagement of first gear, especially in cold weather. Periodic adjustment of the cable between the gearbox and lever is required (although this does not always solve the problem). It is better to combine this operation with an oil change, costing about 100 UAH. The manufacturer believes that the oil in the manual gearbox is designed for the entire service life, but in practice it has to be changed every 100–150 thousand km: due to temperature changes inside the units, moisture accumulates.

The vast majority of Octavia Tour are front-wheel drive, but occasionally all-wheel drive modifications are found. Their transmission uses an electronically controlled Haldex clutch, which locks when the front wheels slip and transfers up to 50% of the torque to the rear axle. All-wheel drive versions are considered reliable, although their maintenance is more expensive than front-wheel drive.

Chassis
The suspension of the Octavia Tour is highly energy-intensive and well adapted to our roads. There are minor complaints about ride smoothness — small irregularities are felt in the cabin.
The suspension design is simple: long-stroke shock absorbers, classic McPherson at the front, semi-independent beam at the rear. The rear beam silent blocks last up to 150,000 km.

In the front suspension, stabilizer bushings have to be replaced on average every 30,000 km (about 150 UAH), struts last longer — up to 70,000 km (about 400 UAH). Some owners complain about a squeak at the front, which is emitted by serviceable bushings. Ball joints and front arm silent blocks withstand about 100,000 km.
The Octavia Tour is equipped with power steering, to which there are no special complaints. Even on our roads, tie rod ends last up to 100 thousand km. The brake system also causes no complaints.
Cost of parts and maintenance
Parts for the Octavia Tour are relatively inexpensive and almost always in stock. The same applies to maintenance at an official dealer. Scheduled maintenance is prescribed once a year or every 15 thousand km of mileage.
Prices for parts (Skoda Octavia 1.6):
Brake discs front/rear — 670/380 UAH.
Pads front/rear — 300/250 UAH.
Stabilizer bushings — 80 UAH. (per piece)
Air filter — 90 UAH.
Hood used — 800–1200 UAH.
Front bumper used — 1000–1200 UAH.
Front headlights used — 800–900 UAH.

Conclusion
The Skoda Octavia Tour is a successful model, as confirmed by the abundance of such cars on the roads. The secret of success is simple: high quality, a practical body with a spacious trunk, and low operating costs.

And finally, an important tip: when choosing a used Octavia Tour, do not blindly trust the odometer readings. This model is often used in corporate fleets, so the mileage of such cars can be significant. Only a specialist can reliably determine the real mileage.
Prices range from 7 thousand dollars for early examples to 17 thousand dollars for cars of recent years of production.
