A large company, lots of things – and as a result, the load on the tires increases significantly. A simple check and adjustment of tire pressure will help avoid many unexpected situations.

The tire and the wheel rim work as a single unit, however, their coordinated interaction cannot 100% ensure the retention of air inside the tire. Therefore, the technical director of Nokian Tyres, Matti Morri, recommends that drivers check tire pressure once every three weeks.

“If the pressure is too low, the tire seems to become heavier, and the car needs more fuel to move. The difference in fuel consumption due to tire pressure is especially visible on the gas station receipt. And this difference is definitely worth inflating the wheels before a trip, because it is absolutely free,” reminds Matti Morri.

A properly inflated tire will roll 10% better. In other words, that's half a liter of fuel per hundred kilometers. And if a long trip is ahead, checking tire pressure is a must. Tire pressure is also important from a safety point of view – it's a real insurance policy, only free. If the tire pressure is insufficient, the car loses maneuverability, and on the road there are situations where fractions of a second decide everything. Insufficient tire pressure also increases the braking distance.

According to the German automobile association ADAC, reducing the pressure only in the front tires by 1 bar (100 kPa) below the recommended level increases the braking distance on a wet surface by 10 meters. With the same pressure reduction in all four tires, the braking distance will increase by another half.

“Tire pressure also affects their service life. If the pressure is 20% below the recommended level, the tire's service life will decrease by one fifth. And if the pressure is 30% lower, the tire will last half as long as it could,” reminds Matti Morri.

Special attention to pressure should be paid by owners of minibuses and vans, whose tires need to be inflated twice as much as on passenger cars. Transporting heavy loads requires increased pressure. For minibuses and commercial vehicles, the pressure is approximately 4-5.5 bar (400-550 kPa).

Tire pressure is important for safe and comfortable driving. If the pressure level corresponds to the manufacturer's recommendation, the tire service life increases, while rolling resistance and fuel consumption decrease. At the same time, exhaust emissions are reduced. In turn, with insufficient tire pressure, the car's handling deteriorates.
