According to the new legal norms:
-
parking operators and owners of individual parking spaces must equip special zones for cars driven by parents with young children;
-
these zones must be marked with special road signs or appropriate markings;
-
such spaces must constitute at least 5% of the total number of parking spots, but if this number is less than one, at least one such space must be provided;
-
they can be used by drivers who have a special sign on their car and are transporting a child under three years old.
Such spaces will be marked in a special way, and access will be granted exclusively to motorists transporting toddlers under three years old. For this purpose, a special identification sign will be placed on their vehicles.
How it works abroad
Allocating separate zones for drivers with children is a long-standing practice. Similar solutions are already applied in many countries, including Austria, Canada, Germany, Poland, Portugal, and in some US states. There, these spaces usually have special markings and are located as close as possible to entrances of shopping centers, medical facilities, or office buildings.
What it gives families
The document accompanying the draft law emphasized that the introduction of such parking spaces will make the environment significantly more inclusive. The process of dropping off and picking up children from the car will become more comfortable and safer, which is critically important for young parents who often cannot find a free spot near the facilities they need.
World practice shows that special spaces for families with young children, located near entrances, increase the level of safety in parking lots and significantly ease the lives of parents who have to carry toddlers or strollers to the car.
