Thanks to this, the car feels confident off-road at low speeds, accelerates faster, and responds better to steering in bad weather. The electric motor also partially compensates for the delays during acceleration associated with the turbocharger.

The electric system operates in one of three modes. Under light load, the Trail’ster moves solely on electric power. In standard situations, the rear electric motor assists the 1.6-liter turbocharged unit with 185 hp in accelerating the vehicle. If the car goes off-road, torque is sent to the rear wheels the moment the front wheels start to slip.

The electric part of the Trail’ster is powered by a lithium-ion polymer battery. The electric motor's power reaches 35 hp, and its torque is 135 N•m. If you combine the figures of both engines, the total output is 220 hp and 386 N•m.

KIA has not yet revealed plans regarding the launch of this model into mass production.
