Volkswagen R's sports division is considering the possibility of creating a "hot" version of an electric vehicle. As the head of the division, Jost Capito, told Autocar, the basis for such a car will be one of the models of the I.D. family — either the I.D. hatchback or the I.D. Crozz crossover.

Capito emphasized that if an R version of the electric car appears, it must be a full-fledged R model, otherwise the entire project would lose its meaning. At the same time, the top manager clarified that at the moment the concept exists only in general terms: the pace of development of electric technologies is so high that the company cannot yet name even an approximate time for the release of such a car.

When creating a "hot" electric vehicle, engineers will have to find a compromise between power, range, and comfort in daily use. These criteria will ultimately influence the choice of the base model for the future new product.

The interest of the sports division in electric vehicles was largely fueled by the brand's victory at the Pikes Peak race. The 680-horsepower electric prototype I.D. R covered a distance of almost 20 kilometers in 7 minutes 57.148 seconds, beating Sebastien Loeb's result in the Peugeot 208 T16 by 16 seconds.
