The world premiere of the new model is scheduled for March this year at the Geneva Motor Show, with European sales set to begin in September.
The estate's luggage compartment holds 527 liters with the second-row seats raised, and folding the rear seats (in a 60/40 split) increases the useful volume to 1600 liters. In this case, a flat loading surface 1962 millimeters long is created. For comparison: the BMW 5 Series Touring has a trunk volume of 560 liters (1670 with the seats folded), while the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate offers 695 liters (1950 liters).
The estate versions based on the Saab 9-5 will receive the same range of powertrains as the sedan. For the European market, three petrol engines with displacements of 1.6, 2.0, and 2.8 liters are available, delivering from 160 to 300 horsepower, as well as diesel engines and units running on bioethanol E85.
Currently, the Saab model lineup includes only the 9-5 sedan and the 9-4X crossover. In the future, the Swedish brand plans to release a new generation of the 9-3 family and a compact model 9-2, for which the company is seeking a technology partner. In addition, Saab and BMW previously signed an agreement for the supply of Bavarian engines for the Swedish brand's models. According to available information, these are 1.6-liter turbocharged engines, which are expected to be installed on the next-generation Saab 9-3 and certain versions of the 9-5 lineup.
