The key change is the appearance of new signal elements: emerald-colored lenses and chevron arrows. They are designed to make signals more visible and understandable for drivers. However, you should not expect a quick update of all intersections — old traffic lights will not be replaced en masse. Their modernization will take place in stages, during road repairs or in case of equipment failure.
Here is what the new regulation provides:
-
introduction of traffic lights for cyclists with a bicycle image — lens diameter 100 mm for bike paths and 200 mm for structures placed above the roadway;
-
launch of combined traffic lights that regulate the movement of cyclists and pedestrians simultaneously;
-
equipping devices with countdown timers for all categories of road users — for pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists;
-
installation of call buttons for the green signal for pedestrians, as well as sound devices for orientation of people with visual impairments.
It is worth noting: the updated standards apply only to new construction or reconstruction projects. So if the usual traffic light has not changed to emerald — this is not a cause for concern, because the process has only just begun.
