According to changes to clause 2.16 of the Traffic Rules, two-wheeled vehicles — motorcycles without sidecars, mopeds, and scooters — can now legally enter lanes designated for public transport. An exception is made for three-wheeled vehicles, motorized wheelchairs, and motorcycles with sidecars: they are obliged to continue driving according to general rules. The author of the innovation was the Patrol Police Department, and the initiative was supported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Why this decision was made:
Fighting traffic jams. Motor vehicles take up minimal space on the road, so their owners will now be able to move faster without obstructing the main flow.
Traffic safety. Lanes for public transport are usually freer, which significantly reduces the likelihood of accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles, especially in heavy traffic.
Compliance with European standards. In most EU countries, motorcyclists have long been allowed to ride in public transport lanes, and this practice has proven effective.
The resolution comes into force immediately after official publication. So very soon, owners of motorcycles and mopeds will be able to take advantage of new opportunities.
For those who drive two-wheeled vehicles, this is a chance to ride around the city with greater speed and less risk. Motorists, in turn, can count on general lanes becoming a bit freer. And pedestrians will see less fussy maneuvering of motorcycles among cars.
How these changes will affect the road situation and accident rate — practice will show, but already now one can expect a positive effect provided that all road users approach the new rules responsibly.
