The updated law introduces more serious penalties for a number of traffic violations. The smallest fine, 425 hryvnias, is for driving without a driver's license left at home. The category of violations for which you will have to pay 510 hryvnias includes:

  • driving without a seat belt or motorcycle helmet;
  • dirty or unreadable license plate;
  • using a phone while driving without a hands-free device;
  • failure to comply with rules for passing intersections and stops, running a red light, violating overtaking rules.

For failing to yield to a police car or ambulance, a fine of 680 hryvnias is provided. If the violation led to an accident, the amount will increase to 850 hryvnias, and for creating a dangerous situation on the road — to 1445 hryvnias. The penalty for fleeing the scene of an accident and for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h is now 3400 hryvnias.

If someone who has never obtained a driver's license gets behind the wheel, they face a fine of 3400 hryvnias. But if the driver was deprived of their license, the penalty becomes much more serious: from 20,400 to 40,800 hryvnias, plus possible license deprivation for 5 to 7 years and paid vehicle confiscation.

The fine for driving under the influence of alcohol is now from 17,000 to 51,000 hryvnias, and additionally may threaten administrative arrest and confiscation of the car. More information about penalties for drunk driving can be found in the Autoportal article.

Interestingly, a fine of 680 hryvnias is now also provided for riding a bicycle while intoxicated. Responsibility for pedestrians has also been tightened: crossing the road in an unauthorized place will now cost not 51 hryvnias, but 255.
