The conceptual novelty from Volkswagen received the name Passat BlueMotion. Externally, the car is almost no different from the regular production versions, and all advanced engineering developments are hidden under the hood. Among the external differences are an unusual radiator grille, which actually acts as a plug, and a neat spoiler on the trunk lid.

In the BlueMotion interior, special finishing materials are used, but the main highlight of the car is the 1.4-liter power unit. In addition to its modest displacement, this engine is notable for a function that allows one or even two cylinders to be deactivated if the road situation permits.

Despite its small displacement, the 1.4 TSI engine produces 150 horsepower, and the automatic DSG transmission can briefly disengage the clutch to allow the car to coast. Additionally, a start-stop system is used.

However, even with all the engineering tricks, the average fuel consumption is stated at 5.6 liters per 100 kilometers. If a diesel unit were used instead of the gasoline one, the efficiency of the Passat BlueMotion would be twice as high.
