The research was based on 750,000 inspection reports published by the UK Ministry of Transport. For each model in the rating, the minimum sample size was 100 cars, while the average was 1,157 cars. In total, WhatCar selected 50 cars, and the final list included 20 cars – 10 in each category (10 best and 10 worst).

So, in first place in the ranking of the highest quality cars is the Hyundai Ioniq (2017-) – it scored 96.18% out of 100%. The second position was taken by the BMW i8 (2014-2020) – 95.97% of the tested units of this model were in excellent technical condition. In third place is the Porsche Boxster (2012-2016), its figure is 94.10%, fourth place – the Lexus NX (2014-present), with 93.82%. The top five is closed by the Porsche 911 (2012-2019) with a passing score of 93.72%. From sixth to tenth place were the Mazda CX-3 (2015-present), Lexus RX (2016-present), Mazda MX-5 (2016-present), and Porsche Macan (2014-present) and Cayman (2013-2016).

As for the anti-rating, it is headed by the Peugeot 5008 (2009-2016) – only 70.81% of units of this model successfully passed the inspection. The Hyundai i800 van (2007-present) also performed poorly – 71.36%. In third place is the Opel Corsa (2006-2014) – 73.48%, in fourth – the Ford Galaxy (2006-2015) with 73.38%, and in fifth – the Fiat Punto (2005-2018) with 73.52%. The top ten outsiders are completed by the Renault Megane (2008-2016), Opel Antara (2006-2015), Citroen DS3 (2009-2016), SsangYong Korando (2011-present), and Kia Sorento (2010-2015).
