Sergey asks:
Kyiv. Entering from Dniprovske Highway onto Zabolotnoho Street. Need to figure out the priority: when driving towards Kyiv from Obukhiv (through the village of Pidhirtsi), right after the car market, two lanes go to the bridge, and on both sides of the road there are "Give Way" signs.

1. Who has the right of way? In the second photo, you can see that the sign on the left is even closer to the road going left. So which drivers should yield? If one of the signs is installed incorrectly, should the "obstacle on the right" rule be applied?

2. Suppose that Zabolotnoho Street (the road on the left) is the main road. The left lane of the secondary road (on the right), marked in blue in photo #4, intersects with the traffic on Zabolotnoho Street (yellow), and here everything is clear — you need to yield. But the right lane of the secondary road (green) does not intersect (visible in photo #3)! Then it turns out that part of the road (opposite the Ramada Encore hotel) is three-lane. Who must the driver in the right lane of the secondary road yield to? After all, the "Give Way" sign is there, but there is no lane intersection.

Is it necessary to let pass a car that is changing into this third (green) lane from Zabolotnoho Street (yellow lane)?

Experts of the Karat driving school answer:
1. Article 6 of the Convention requires placing road signs so that drivers for whom they are intended can easily and timely recognize them. A sign installed on the side of the road in the direction of travel must be duplicated above the roadway or on the opposite side if, due to local conditions, it might go unnoticed.
DSTU 4100.2002 explains: on roads with two or more lanes in one direction, signs may be duplicated. They are placed on the median strip, and if there is none — on the left side of the road. In our case, the "Give Way" sign is on the right, and on the left is a duplicate, and its requirement is mandatory. Therefore, vehicles traveling on Zabolotnoho Street have the right of way.

2. According to traffic rules § 16.11, at an intersection of unequal roads, a driver on a secondary road must yield to all vehicles moving on the main road, regardless of where they are heading next. Traffic rules § 1.10 defines an intersection as a place where roads cross, join, or branch at the same level.
Based on this, even if there is no direct intersection of lanes, we must still yield to vehicles on Zabolotnoho Street, since they may change into this right (green in photo #4) lane.

To summarize:
1. With one-way traffic, signs may be duplicated on the left. Here, the advantage is for cars following Zabolotnoho Street.
2. Even in such a situation, priority remains with traffic on the main road (Zabolotnoho Street).

Recall that we have previously touched on the topic of priority when changing lanes.
