The Ministry of Transport of Japan has given official permission to use a screen instead of an interior mirror, which displays an image from an external camera. The new rules are already in effect.

Previously, in Japan, the installation of a display was allowed only together with a regular mirror. One of the factors holding back the changes was the position of the UN, whose experts previously believed that cameras could not guarantee sufficient safety of view.

At the end of 2015, at the UN World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations, the use of cameras and screens instead of mirrors was approved.

According to forecasts, in 6-7 years, approximately every third car in Japan will be equipped with a display instead of an interior mirror, and a tenth of cars will receive screens replacing side mirrors.
