Now the placement of billboards, citylights and other advertising boards is prohibited at a distance closer than 10 meters from intersections and ground pedestrian crossings. For public transport stops this restriction is even stricter — the minimum distance is 30 meters. If a structure is installed in violation of these norms, it is simply dismantled. The city mayor's office explains that such measures were a response to constant appeals from motorists who complained about worsened visibility due to boards. In addition, such structures often suffer from hurricane winds. A particular problem is caused by brightly lit structures at night. Kyiv authorities plan to hold negotiations with owners of illuminated advertising boards and shop windows to limit their operation during dark hours. It is expected that from 22:00 to 7:00 the backlighting will be turned off so as not to blind drivers.
