The international ranking was compiled by the Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), based on data from the World Health Organization for 2008. Statistics on the number of road fatalities per 100,000 population were used.

The most unsafe roads turned out to be in Asia and northern South America. The first place went to Namibia (45 road deaths per 100,000 population), second – Thailand (44 deaths), and third – Iran (38 deaths).

The average figure across all countries is 18 deaths, while in Ukraine it is 11 people per 100,000 population.

The fewest people die under vehicle wheels in the Maldives (2 deaths per 100,000), with Tajikistan also included (with 3 road accident victims), which indicates rather free local traffic and low purchasing power of the population.
