In recent weeks, when the country was hit by heavy snowfall, the safety situation on domestic highways has noticeably worsened.
“Comments” contacted the Ministry of Internal Affairs with a request about which car brands are most often involved in accidents, and based on the data obtained, compiled a rating of accident rates of vehicles on Ukrainian roads.
According to information provided to the publication by the Center for Road Safety and Automated Systems under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, over 11 months of the current year, 27,988 road accidents with injuries or fatalities were recorded on the country's roads. In total, from January to November 2012, 34,309 people were injured in accidents. 4,663 people died, meaning on average one death occurred every two hours.
If we look at the statistics by driver experience of participants in accidents with injuries and fatalities, drivers with up to two years of experience are most often involved in such accidents — 26.1% of the total. Slightly less often, 13.3%, are those who have been driving for two to five years. The remaining 60.6% have more than five years of experience.
VAZ cars turned out to be the most accident-prone. Over 11 months of 2012, 39,748 accidents occurred with their participation. In other words, approximately five VAZ cars get into accidents every hour on Ukrainian roads. As for incidents with injuries and fatalities, 6,949 were recorded — this is 17.5% of all accidents involving VAZ.
The second line of the rating is occupied by ZAZ with its popular “Lanos” models. From January to November 2012 — 9,993 accidents, of which 1,282 resulted in bodily injuries of varying severity or death. In percentage terms, this is 12.8% of all accidents with ZAZ cars. The third and fourth places went to Mercedes-Benz (10,061 accidents, of which 1,271 with serious consequences; 12.6%) and Chevrolet (10,372 / 868 accidents; 11.9%).
