When frosts were not so severe, you could get by with jump-starting. But now it's better not to rely on this method — you should think about replacing the battery in advance. Choosing a brand is only the first step. Buying a Ukrainian or imported product often depends on budget and personal preferences: a serviceable or maintenance-free option. In addition, all brands divide batteries into economy, standard, and premium. Let's try to clarify this issue. These categories do not indicate the quality of the battery itself — they indicate for what level of vehicle electrical equipment the battery is intended. For example, you decided to buy a Bosch Silver 60 amp with a mounting length of 242 mm. Here the question of choice immediately arises. Bosch has three options: S3 at 56 Ah with a black cover, S4 at 60 Ah with a blue cover, and S5 at 63 Ah with a silver cover. What is the difference between the series and how to choose the best option? It is important to understand: the technology and manufacturing quality of all series are equally high. Many mistakenly consider S3 to be low-grade. The main difference is the thickness of the plates, which changes the starting characteristics. The thicker the plates, the higher the peak load that the battery can withstand when starting the engine.
The manufacturer gives the following recommendations:
Bosch S3 – 56 Ah for petrol cars with an engine up to 1.4 L
Bosch S4 – 60 Ah for petrol cars with an engine of 1.6–1.8 L
Bosch S5 – 63 Ah for petrol cars with an engine of 1.8–2.0 L or small diesel engines
It would seem that everything is clear, but there are nuances. For a Chevrolet Aveo with a 1.4 engine, the S3 at 56 amps is ideal. But if the car has a lot of additional electrical equipment or it operates as a taxi, it is better to install the S4 at 60 amps. Another example: a Volkswagen Polo 1.6 according to factory recommendations requires a Bosch at 60 amps. However, with short city trips (for example, 5 km to work and back), the battery will not have time to charge from the generator, so in such a situation it is more reasonable to install a Bosch at 56 amps. Remember: in an undercharged battery, the electrolyte density drops, it decomposes and settles on the lead plates in the form of sulfate, which isolates them from the electrolyte. If the car is used intensively and is packed with non-standard equipment, then you can safely install the S5 at 63 amps — you should not be afraid of overcharging.
By the same principle, choose the economy, standard, or premium series for other sizes. If the car has a battery with a length of 278 mm, then it is a Bosch S3 at 70 Ah, S4 at 74 Ah, or S5 at 77 Ah.
With Japanese and Korean cars it is simpler: for the Asian size, Bosch produces only the standard series Bosch S4 azia. Other manufacturers, such as Rocket, Medalist, and Topla, have a much wider choice for Asian cars.
P. S. For diesel engines, we strongly advise taking only the Bosch S5 series or similar power batteries from any brand.
