The company attributes the production halt to the approaching typhoon "Lionrock." The timeline for resuming vehicle production has not yet been announced.
Conveyors have been stopped at plants located in Iwate and Miyagi prefectures. According to forecasts, the storm is expected to reach the Japanese coast by evening.
Exactly a year ago, Toyota had already suspended operations at three plants in the northeast of the country. That halt was triggered by heavy rainfall that caused flooding in some regions.
In 2015, due to bad weather, two plants in Miyagi and facilities in neighboring Iwate, under the jurisdiction of Toyota Motor East Japan, were closed. As a result, the production sites managed to avoid damage from the floods.
