On April 20, Mitsubishi Motors management officially confirmed that it had deliberately inflated fuel efficiency figures for small cars, which were mainly intended for sale on the Japanese market. At that time, it was about 600 thousand vehicles sold between mid-2013 and March 2016.
Mitsubishi explained that test data for Japanese regulators was provided using a methodology adopted in the United States. Approaches to measuring fuel consumption in these two countries differ significantly, since in America highway driving prevails, while in Japan cars are most often operated in dense urban traffic jams.
As Reuters reports, since April 20, Mitsubishi Motors' market capitalization has almost halved, losing about $3.9 billion. The company said that an independent commission of external experts will be formed for an internal investigation, and three months are allotted for this probe. Earlier, the company's CEO Tetsuro Aikawa claimed that he had no idea about the illegal actions of his subordinates, reports Motor.
