Matt Harrison noted that, unlike its rivals, Toyota successfully earns money on compact A-class cars, adding that about a hundred thousand Aygo units are sold annually. For this reason, the Japanese manufacturer will definitely present the next generation of the model, which will receive a "less familiar design" that meets "modern customer requirements." The debut of the new product is scheduled for 2021–2022.
A Toyota representative also refuted rumors that the new Aygo would be electric. Harrison is confident that an electric car in this segment would inevitably be too expensive, which would not appeal to potential customers. He explained that the third generation Aygo will be created with possible electrification in mind, but initially a version with a simple and affordable petrol engine will appear on the market.
Toyota is not afraid of stricter environmental regulations and possible fines from European regulators — according to Harrison's calculations, the Japanese company will be able to meet the requirements for average CO2 emissions thanks to a large number of hybrid models. At the same time, three fully electric Toyota vehicles are planned to be launched on the European market by 2021.
