Information has appeared on foreign forums dedicated to the BMW 1-Series, citing insider sources, that the future BMW 2-Series in the M version will most likely receive a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, rather than the inline six-cylinder currently used in the 1M model.
This decision is probably due to marketing considerations — since it is already known that the M3 will lose its V8 engine and get an inline six-cylinder — as well as the desire to position the new model as completely separate from the 1-Series. Therefore, it is quite natural that a smaller-displacement engine with a different configuration than the M3 has been chosen for the junior M2.
The most likely candidate for the M2's engine bay is the N20 engine, which develops a maximum power of 250 hp and 350 Nm of torque. It is possible that the M2 will be less powerful than the 1M. According to insiders, "the M2 should become a 'reduced' version of the M, and therefore BMW M is studying the concept of a completely reworked N20 engine." According to this concept, the new car will become a kind of entry ticket to the world of the "most powerful letter," and the lower power will be compensated by chassis and steering settings.
